marble angel

On our way home from the cottage we took a wee side trip to have a look at this beauty.  The story is that in the early 1900s Danylshen Luchuk took for his bride the district school teacher, Sophia who was Italian.  Unfortunately, Sophia died in childbirth within the year.  Dan ordered this marble angel from Italy for her grave but with times being tough he was unable to pay for it upon it's arrival; however, the railroad didn't want the expense of shipping it back to Italy so they left it behind. Apparently every July a single white lily blooms on her grave.   Sophia has had this exquisite guardian angel for over a hundred years!   Dan is not buried there which makes one wonder about the rest of the story ....

What a lovely guardian angel--well worth the side trip, I'd say, Kate!
